Glen Watson

Glen Watson, when on the Huntsville City Council, kept a tough ordnance on illegal immigration from being passed. The tragic death of 2 Huntsville teenagers on April 2009 was another unfortunate result of having illegal immigrants in our town.
Another example of talk but no action was reflected in the Huntsville City Council meeting on August 10, 2006. A ordnance on illegal immigration was proposed then pulled before it could be voted on. The Huntsville home builders needed cheap labor and it was rumored the Glen Watson stopped the ordnance from passing to appease them.

Let it be pointed out that the City of Huntsville failed to take action in 2006 to pass a strong ordnance dealing with this situation.
Further, it was Glen Watson who moved to table the proposed ordnance.
Glen's excuse was that we need a task force to study the situation.
With pro and con people appointed to this task force, nothing was every accomplished, which was the apparent reason for this task force. Glen Watson deserves the blame for no action on this matter.

Read the below documentation:

AGENDA FOR THE HUNTSVILLE CITY COUNCIL REGULAR MEETING
TO BE HELD AUGUST 10, 2006 AT 6:00 P.M.
IN THE CITY COUNCIL CHAMBERS

13. UNFINISHED BUSINESS ITEMS FOR ACTION.
c. Ordinance No. 06-699, concerning the Illegal Immigration Relief Ordinance. (Introduced July 27, 2006 Regular Council Meeting) (Watson)

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. A Huntsville city councilman has proposed a law that would fine landlords renting to illegal immigrants 1-thousand dollars a day.

Huntsville City Councilman Glen Watson has proposed the law as part of his Illegal Immigrant Relief Act Ordinance. The act also makes English the official language of city businesses and would penalize employers hiring illegal immigrants.

Watson says he’s proposing the laws because - quote — “anybody coming into this country, and into our city, should be a legal citizen of this country,”

The ordinance will be introduced Thursday night.

Illegal immigration ordinance tabled by Huntsville council

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. A proposal that would crackdown on illegal immigration has been tabled despite a call by a group of conservative Christians for backers to attend the Huntsville City Council meeting and "intimidate" members into supporting it.

Councilman Glenn Watson pulled the ordinance before debate began tonight. He said he wanted to give a task force time to study illegal immigration and its affect on the city. The proposal would establish penalties for companies that hire illegal immigrants and property owners renting to them.

About 100 people were at the meeting. That came after an e-mail was sent urging backers to attend.

The message circulating among members of the Conservative Christians of Alabama sought support for Watson's ordinance.

The e-mail said - quote -- "Your presence is needed to cheer our speakers and intimidate the Huntsville City Council."

Glen Watson pulled the ordinance and instead created a task force to review illegal immigration. Unfortunately nothing happened.

Bob Long Madison County Comissioner

Bob Long Speech

Good Morning to Huntsville’s Twickenham Republican Women’s Group and thank you for inviting me here to speech at your luncheon; I am Bob Long, a candidate for County Commissioner, District One. It is a great time for Conservatives – I believe Madison County has fielded more Republican candidates this year then almost anytime in recent memory. I encourage each of you to get your family and friends involved in the primary election on June 3rd, as well as the general election. I have three main issues Taxes, Roads, and Immigration Reform and I’d like to touch on each of these major points – but first, why am I running?

Bob Long is running because I am tired of the same old business as usual mentality that has affected our politicians as of late – I am not singling out Democrats, it’s Republicans too.  We do not tax too little we spend too much of our hard earned money at the local, state, and federal level.  I am tired of being taxed and taxed and not getting anything in return except more empty promises – there is NO accountability.  I will be accountable for every penny I spend as a County Commissioner.  I will make sure the voters know my voting record and how I intend to spend their money.  I will not unilaterally raise taxes as a commissioner.  I believe that any tax increase should be voted on by all registered voters of this county and the money should only be spent as promised – once that project is complete I believe there should be a provision to return the tax rate to it’s previous level.

Bob Long is an Iraqi war veteran and Bronze Star recipient; I also served in Afghanistan, Desert Storm, and many other military campaigns. I believe a strong military as well as a grounded family will secure America’s freedoms abroad and sustain our way of life back home. I have been personally responsible for the management of money and property for the military valued in the billions of dollars; I have successfully planned and implemented both small and large building projects all over the world. As a leader I have led men and women in both peacetime and at war. I am an optimistic candidate that believes that once elected I can be a great asset to our county. I believe that it’s up to the individual to make change happen – for far to long our district has waited and acted on crisis after crisis vs. proactively planning and implementing long-term solutions. I believe we can and must do a better job, I believe it’s time for a true conservative to manage and lead District One into the future and to do that I have outlined below what some of my goals are for our district.

I understand the passionate debate regarding the sales tax increase - this is a tough issue, and one that should be settled by all voters of the county – not the commissioners. As a commissioner, I will listen to the residents of District One and allocate their tax dollars in concert with their top priorities. The Madison County budget has increased $32 million dollars in the last 5 years from a budget of $77 million for the 2003 fiscal year to $109 million for the 2007/8 fiscal year – ending with an almost a 7 million dollar reserve fund – we should be looking at ways to cut taxes not increase them.

I am also running because it about time something is done to make our roads safer, the primary purpose of a County Commissioner is to maintain the roads within the district – this is a TOP priority for me – not just road improvements but road maintenance as well.  I also will wholeheartedly support the impounding of vehicles driven by unlicensed and uninsured drivers. Madison County has third highest death rate in the state, with 75 deaths due to traffic accidents in 2006. I believe it is incumbent on the county commission to do everything within their means to make Madison County roads safer and should strive to enact local ordinances that empower police to have vehicles towed if the driver cannot prove they are licensed and/or insured. Vehicles that are not claimed should be sold at public auction, the cost to the tow service should be remitted and all additional monies should go toward our roads and schools.

As a retired military member I have traveled worldwide, I understand the desire of people all over the world to want to immigrate to the United States, the land of unlimited potential and opportunity. That said, this is a nation of laws that must be enforced for the protection of our sovereignty, security and prosperity. I will support strict immigration ordinances at the county level. I think it’s long overdue for this county and this state to start making it harder for illegal aliens to live, work and go to school in our community.  Illegal workers place a huge burden on all public services – health and medical costs, schools, police and fire services, as well as local tax revenues not realized.  These workers are taking wages from our legal citizens and not returning any money into our local economy supporting business, going toward taxes, or supporting the infrastructure our county needs. This is not just a federal issue – it is an issue that affects every one of us – mostly in our pocketbooks.

As Americans first, we all have a duty to uphold the laws of this country, this state and this county. I believe that companies are morally compelled to hire employee’s legally allowed to work, pay a fair wage, and providing adequate benefits for their employees.

Finally, can Bob Long win?  The simple answer is yes, I would have never run if I thought I wouldn’t win the June 3rd primary and the general election in November.  I am the only traditional conservative running in District One, I think the voters of our district are looking for a change, I am a PROVEN leader, with the vision and ideas necessary to move our district forward – I am not a career politician but a concerned citizen who wants to do my part to make our community better for all of us. I recently received endorsements from both the Conservative Christians of Alabama (CCOFAL) and Citizens Against Drunk Driving (CADD) and as a life long conservative, my core values have never wavered. I certainly appreciated these endorsements and will continue support conservative ideals.

Mike Gillespie, - Madison County Commissioner

Mike Gillespie - is Chairman of the Madison County Commission, Alabama

Documentation - Sales Tax Increases in Madison County

Tax increases continue to go up, and the AEA Education Lobby and several Madison County
Commissioners have been pushing hard to raise additional taxes.
Our property taxes are now going up on an annual basis due to the
annual reappraisal of property taxes. Further, since the 2005 BRAC
Announcement property values have gone up significantly. Most
property owners reporting 30% to 40% increase in property taxes to
support the public schools. Education leaders and many members of the
Madison County Commission, led by Chairman Mike Gillespie have been
clamoring for more tax increases, especially a 1/2 cent sales tax
increase.

MIKE GILLESPIE AND TAXES

The below is documentation of the determination of Mike Gillespie to raise taxes in Madison County.
For the past 2 years, Mike Gillespie has been one of the major leaders to increase sales taxes in Madison County.
Public record and newspaper accounts reflect several occasions of Mike Gillespie working to raise taxes.

Commission Chairman Mike Gillespie said if commissioners place the sales-tax question on the November ballot, supporters
will have to "clearly articulate" to voters why the extra money is needed and how it would be spent.
"I think the needs are there," Gillespie said Tuesday. "It's just a matter of helping the community understand." Sept 20,
2006 Huntsville Times.

"Expect (Mike) Gillespie to say "yes", too, making a pro tax
majority." Sept 24, 2006 Huntsville Times.

"Commission Chairman Mike Gillespie has said he would vote for the
tax in the event of a tie.
The half-cent levy would raise about $21 million a year that the Huntsville, Madison
and Madison County school systems could use to build, repair and
expand schools."
Huntsville Times. Nov 17, 2006

"A divided County Commission shelved the half-cent tax hike Oct. 27 after
four of the six commissioners refused to support it. Commission Chairman
Mike Gillespie, who has voiced support for the tax, votes only in case
of a tie. The commission passed a resolution banning another vote until
after the 2008 elections unless one of the four opposing commissioners
brings it back for reconsideration."
February 16, 2007 Huntsville Times

A referendum for a ½ cent sales tax was voted on in on June 3, 2008, during the Republican and Democratic Primary.
Voters soundly by a 2/3 margin voted against the tax.

At the following meeting of the Madison County Commission, there was discussion of the sales tax vote.
The newspaper account of the meeting mentioned that there were rumors that
commissioners would approve the sales tax after the November election.
A reporter from the Huntsville Times questioned Mike Gillespie and his support of the sale tax.
It was pointed out that previously in 1984, there was a failed sales tax referendum.
However following that failed tax vote, Mike Gillespie and other Madison County Commissioners voted anyway for the sales
tax.

The Huntsville Times made this observation:
“Gillespie, the commission's chairman, voted to raise education sales taxes in 1984
after a failed sales tax referendum. But the situation then was "absolutely, 100
percent different," he said, with schools in much worse shape.”

Election Day November 4, 2008 – Referendum on Taxes
After two years of efforts of Mike Gillespie in trying to raise sales taxes, the voters had the opportunity on June 3,
2008 to say “No” to more sales
taxes. The tenure of Mike Gillespie reflects a constant effort to vote for additional tax increases and more
support for public schools. The simple question remains, are the educators and Mike Gillespie, correct in asserting
that more money is needed to support the public schools? The election on November 3 in essence is a referendum on taxes.
Those wishing for increasing sales taxes and requiring more support for public schools should obviously vote for Mike
Gillespie.
Those oppose to the concept of more taxes have the option to vote for anti-tax Dick French, Republican Candidate for
Chairman, Madison County Commission.

Conservative Congress

We need a Conservative Congress that will follow the Constitution.
